Death Investigation in Pike County
Date of News Release: 08/14/2009
(Pikeville, Ky.) -- KSP Post 9 received a call of a burglary in progress in Elkhorn City. An Elkhorn City Police Department Officer and CVE Officer Keith Justice were dispatched to the scene. While en route, CVE Officer Justice was advised that a subject at the scene had fled in a white van. Officer Justice located the van in the Yellow Hill area of Pike County and attempted to stop the vehicle. The subject stopped the vehicle and fled on foot. The subject ignored numerous requests to stop and jumped into the Levisa Fork of the Big Sandy River. Officer Justice saw the subject drop below the surface of the water and never resurface. Millard Fire Department and Rescue and Elkhorn City Ambulance were immediately dispatched to the scene. The body was located in the river at approximately 1652 hours by rescue squad personnel. The decedent was identified as Walter C. Holbrooks, 37 years old of Bowling Fork Road, Rockhouse, Kentucky. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Pike County Deputy Coroner Denver Bailey at 1720 hours. Kentucky State Police Detectives Jason Merlo, U/1008, and Gary Sykes, U/696, are conducting the death investigation. Kentucky State Police were assisted at the scene by Millard Fire Department, Elkhorn City Police Department and Elkhorn City Ambulance Service.
