Fatal Collision on State Highway 194 in Pike County
Date of News Release: 06/08/2009
(Pikeville, Ky.) - James B. Mullins, age 34 of Phyllis, was traveling east on State Highway 194 and failed to negotiate a curve. His vehicle went off the eastbound shoulder, struck some utility poles which were lying beside the road, overturned and came to final rest on its top in the creek. Passenger Donnie Abshire, age 51 of Phyllis, was pronounced dead at the scene by Pike County Deputy Coroner Denver Bailey. James B. Mullins was air lifted to Holston Valley Medical Center in Tennessee. The collision is under investigation by Trooper Johnny Slone who was assisted at the scene by Lieutenant Henry Banks, Trooper Randall Coots, Grapevine Fire Department, Fedscreek Fire Department, Elkhorn City Ambulance and DHP Ambulance.
