News Release

Robbery 1st Degree Investigation & Arrest in Pike County

Date of News Release: 02/04/2009

(Pikeville, KY) - On 02/04/2009 at 3:49 p.m. Post 09 Pikeville, KY received a report of an armed robbery at Castle's Jewelry at Weddington Square Plaza at Coal Run, Pikeville, KY. Gregg Callas entered the store armed with a handgun and struggled with a female employee. Mr. allas then left the store in a 2001 Ford Tauras driving south on U.S. 23. Trooper Brad Austin located the vehicle followed it to the Wal-Mart Parking Lot in Pikeville, KY. Mr. Callas then held the handgun to his own head as though he would shoot himself. Lt. Henry Banks and Lt. Sean Welch of the Kentucky State Police and a Pikeville City Police Unit arrived on the scene along with Trooper Austin. Gregg Callas soon surrendered to police with no further incidence. He is lodged in the Pike County Detention Center and charged with robbery 1st degree and three counts of wanton endagerment 1st. degree. The case is under investigation by Detective B. J. Caudill U/955 of the Kentucky State Police Post 9. Bond is set at $50,000.00 full cash.
