Bracken County Officer Involved Shooting
Date of News Release: 06/01/09
(Dry Ridge, Ky.) -- On Sunday, May 31, 2009, at approximately 2000 hours, a Trooper from the Kentucky State Police Dry Ridge Post, along with an officer from the Bracken County Sheriff's Office, arrived at the residence of Robert and Valerie Bradford on Eden Ridge Road in response to domestic violence assault complaint. Upon their arrival, Mr. Bradford, 50 years of age, met the officers and confronted them with a firearm at which time the Trooper discharged his weapon at Mr. Bradford. However, it appears that Mr. Bradford was not hit at this time. Mr. Bradford then barricaded himself, with a weapon, in a storage barn adjacent to his residence. Additional Troopers from the Dry Ridge Post, Officers from the Campbell County Police Department, and an additional officer from the Bracken County Sheriff's Office arrived on the scene to assist. Mr. Bradford refused to comply with the officer's repeated verbal commands to drop his weapon and exit the building peacefully. At approximately 2130 hours, Mr. Bradford became mobile by entering and starting a piece of heavy equipment, known as a front-end loader, parked next to the storage barn. He used this equipment, which weighs approximately 30,000 pounds, to ram a state police vehicle and then charged at the officers with it while brandishing a firearm. It was at this time that officers fired upon Mr. Bradford in order to prevent him from running over or hitting several officers at the scene with the front-end loader. Mr. Bradford was transported to the Meadowview Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead by the Mason County Coroner. No officers were injured. The incident remains under investigation.
