Post 6 Memorial Week Services

(Dry Ridge, Ky.) -- On Wednesday, May 13, 2009, starting at 1:00 PM, the Kentucky State Police Post 6, Dry Ridge will honor three fallen Troopers buried in the Dry Ridge Post area during the National Police Memorial week. Post 6 Troopers will place a wreath at the gravesites of Trooper Herbert C. Bush, Trooper Robert R. Miller, and Trooper Joe Ward, Jr. who were all killed in the Line of Duty.

Each year, Kentucky State Police units place a wreath at the gravesite of Troopers who gave the ultimate sacrifice while serving the Commonwealth of Kentucky. There have been twenty-five Kentucky State Police Troopers who have died in the line of duty since the agency's inception in 1948. Our thoughts and prayers will always remain with these families who have suffered and grieved their loss. The Troopers who remain holding the "Thin Gray Line" are reminded daily, through their ultimate sacrifice, of the dangers we face, and wish to promote public safety through service, integrity, and professionalism.

Trooper Herbert C. Bush, age 28, was fatally injured Oct. 11, 1958, when an automobile struck his patrol car while he was in pursuit of a speeding vehicle. He was assigned to Post 7 Richmond and had served with the Kentucky State Police for one year and four months. Trooper Bush was survived by his wife. He is buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Newport, Ky. Designation of a memorial roadway in honor of the service and sacrifice of Trooper Bush is pending.

Trooper Robert R. Miller, age 24, was fatally injured Feb. 14, 1951, in an automobile accident while en route to a call for assistance in Boone County. He was assigned to Post 6 Dry Ridge and had served with the Kentucky State Police for three years. He is buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Erlanger, Ky. Designation of a memorial roadway in honor of the service and sacrifice of Trooper Miller is pending.

Trooper Joseph Ward Jr, age 25, died April 23, 1973, after being struck and killed by a vehicle while working an accident in Hopkins County. Trooper Ward was assigned to Post 2 Madisonville and was a four-year veteran of the Kentucky State Police. He is buried in Hillcrest Cemetery in Grant County, Ky. Designation of a memorial highway in honor of the service and sacrifice of Trooper Ward is pending.
