Hazardous Material Spill on U.S. Highway 42

(Campbellsburg, Ky.) -- On Wednesday July 22, 2009 at 6:33 A.M. Kentucky State Police responded to U.S. highway 42 east of Bedford in reference to an overturned commercial vehicle leaking concentrated hydrogen peroxide. The Tractor and Trailer was traveling east bound and left the right side of the highway where it entered a ditch line and struck an earth embankment. The trailer overturned in the ditch line and was ruptured causing its contents to leak. Loss of control by the driver and inattention were determined to be contributing factors in the collision.

The commercial truck was being operated by Eleuterio Piaz from Madison, Wisonson. Piaz was wearing his seatbelt and reported no injuries.

The collision is currently under investigation by Kentucky State Police Trooper Michael Webb. Additional assistance at the scene was provided by the Bedford Fire Department, Milton Fire Department, Trimble County E.M.S., The Trimble County Sheriff's Department, The Kentucky Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, and the Environmental Protection Agency.

A representative for the trucking company advised that no lasting or damaging effects are expected from the leak.

The leak has been contained however the road is expected to remain closed for the duration of the day from the intersection of U.S. 421 and Highway 42 in Bedford to Highway 36 and Highway 42 in Carroll County.
