Law Enforcement Memorial Week

(Bowling Green, Ky.) -- The Kentucky State Police Post 3 in Bowling Green will be recognizing the State Police Officers from the Bowling Green area who have given the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. During the week of May 10 through May 16, we will recognize Law Enforcement Memorial Week. On Thursday, May 14, memorial wreaths will be placed on each individual's grave and we will hold a brief ceremony honoring the respected individual.
At 8:30 am on Thursday we will honor Lt. William C. Smith at Fairview Cemetery in Bowling Green. Lt. Smith, age 45, was shot and killed on April 26, 1973, while attempting to arrest a murder suspect in Warren County. Lt. Smith was assigned to Post 3 Bowling Green and was a 24 year veteran of the Kentucky State Police.
At 10:00 am in Quality, KY, Darrell V. Phelps will be honored at Union Cemetery. Det. Phelps was fatally shot on August 7, 1980, while investigating illegal cultivation of marijuana in Edmonson County, KY. He was assigned to Post 3 Bowling Green and was an 11 - year veteran of the KSP.
After honoring Det. Phelps, we will proceed to Adairville, KY, and recognize Tpr. William O. Thurtell at Greenwood Cemetery at 1:00 pm. Tpr. Thurtell, age 42, died September 29, 1972, from injuries sustained in a vehicle accident while enroute to a call for assistance in Logan County. Tpr. Thurtell was assigned to Post 3 Bowling Green and was a 15 - year veteran of the KSP.
Tpr. William H. Barrett will be honored at Riverside Cemetery in Woodbury, TN at 4:00 pm. Tpr. Barrett, age 35, died December 19, 1971, when he was ambushed and shot in Warren County. Tpr. Barrett was assigned to Post 3 Bowling Green and had served the KSP for three years.
