KSP Post 2 Commander Honored

(Madisonville, Ky.) -- On May 5, 2009, Captain William M. Marks Jr., Commander of the Kentucky State Police Post 2 Madisonville, was presented with the Commissioner's Commendation for his outstanding achievement in keeping with the highest tradition of the Kentucky State Police.

On January 27, 2009, a severe ice storm moved through Western Kentucky causing widespread devastation. In the wake of the storm, hundreds of thousands of Kentuckians were left without electricity. The supply of water to homes and businesses was disrupted. Roadways were ice covered and in many cases impassable due to fallen trees.

The Kentucky State Police Post 2 Madisonville was adversely affected by the storm, along with the surrounding area. The Post facility was without electricity and water. The KEWS (radio) tower sites in the Post area lost power disrupting communications. Employees had no electricity or water at their homes. Roadways were blocked and travel was perilous.

In the aftermath of the storm, it became apparent that it would be weeks before normalcy would be restored to the area. Captain Marks was faced with a multitude of operational obstacles under extremely difficult circumstances. Captain Marks overcame these obstacles and maintained the delivery of police services to the public. In addition, Post 2 personnel assisted storm victims with humanitarian aid. Captain Marks opened up the Post to employees and their families. He made every effort to ensure the needs of his employees were met.

Captain Marks worked tirelessly throughout the event to ensure the efficient operation of his command. His leadership and dedication to duty during this time of emergency brought great credit to himself and the Kentucky State Police. The determination, commitment and professionalism of Captain Marks exemplify those standards held in the highest regard by the Kentucky State Police.

Captain Marks is a 24-year veteran of the KSP. He was promoted to the rank of captain in June of 2006 and was appointed Commander of Post 2 in February of 2008.
