KSP Recognize National Public Safety Telecommunications Week

(Madisonville, Ky.) -- Each year since 1991, the second week of April has been designated as National Public Safety Telecommunications Week and is intended to recognize the many contributions of telecommunications professionals nationwide. The Kentucky State Police has 175 telecommunicators located at its 16 posts throughout the state with 8 being assigned to the Madisonville Post.

The KSP has undergone many changes in recent years and our telecommunications personnel are called upon to perform more demanding tasks than ever before. The role of telecommunications personnel has evolved in recent years resulting in KSP communication centers now providing a wide range of services that include law enforcement, fire, and EMS related calls for service. Their duties include dealing with highly emotional callers, notifying the proper responding agencies, calling wrecker services, running license plate and driver's license numbers, running criminal histories while continuing to answer new calls and handling other radio traffic.

Captain William Marks, Commander of the Madisonville KSP Post, stated, "It is fitting that we take this time to honor the men and women of this unsung profession."
