Stats from Post 2 for 2008
Date of News Release: 01/12/2009
(Madisonville, KY) - For the year of 2008, Post 2 Reports the following activity:
**There were 36 fatalities in 31 crashes reported in the Post 2 District in 2008. This is a dramatic decrease from 2007 when 45 lives were lost in 44 fatal crashes. This is the fewest number of fatalities in the Post 2 District since 1994 when there were also 36 fatalities reported. Captain William Marks, Commander of Post 2 Madisonville stated, "Although the decrease in fatalities is excellent, there is still room for improvement. We must continue our education and enforcement efforts to emphasize the importance of using restraints."
The following is a breakdown by county of fatal crashes in the Post 2 District in 2008:
| Caldwell | 1 crash | 2 fatalities |
| Christian | 8 crash | 8 fatalities |
| Crittenden | 2 crash | 2 fatalities |
| Hopkins | 10 crash | 12 fatalities |
| Muhlenberg | 8 crash | 10 fatalities |
| Todd | 1 crash | 1 fatality |
| Webster | 1 crash | 1 fatality |
Of the 36 fatalities in 2008, 23 were not wearing seat belts, 8 were wearing seat belts, 4 were not wearing a helmet, and the seat belt status of 1 was unknown. Alcohol was a suspected factor in 6 fatal crashes that killed 6 people.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers may remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
Throughout the month, troopers from the Madisonville Kentucky State Police Post will conduct traffic safety checkpoints in the Post 2 District. At these checkpoints, troopers will be targeting impaired drivers, checking for properly restrained adults and children and observing for any other safety violations. For traffic safety checkpoint locations in your area, you may refer to the web site: www.kentuckystatepolice.org/posts/press/post2_checkpoints.htm.
Post 2 serves the following counties: Caldwell, Christian, Crittenden, Hopkins, Muhlenberg, Todd, and Webster.
The Kentucky State Police remind everyone to "buckle up" and have a safe year!
**These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
