Blue Lights Across the Bluegrass

Date of News Release: 07/19/2009

(Hickory, Ky.) -- Beginning Monday, July 20th, Kentucky State Police will partner with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and local law enforcement with the start of the "Blue Lights Across the Bluegrass" highway enforcement campaign. This enforcement period will last through July 31st. During this time, troopers and other law enforcement officers will be focusing on speeding, reckless driving, and occupant protection violations. As always strict attention and a zero tolerance attitude will be given to DUI offenses. A primary focus will be given to McCracken, Marshall, and Calloway counties due to each of these counties having a higher highway fatality rate in 2009 and previous years. Kentucky State Police personnel including detectives and supervisors will conduct enforcement during this period to help boost the mobilization efforts.

Motorists are asked to always practice defensive driving in order to help avoid being involved in a traffic collision. By utilizing the vehicle occupant restraint (seat belt, child seat, booster seat) motorists can greatly reduce their chances of becoming a statistic during this summer season. As always, motorists are encouraged to report erratic drivers by contacting the Kentucky State Police at 1-800-222-5555. Callers should attempt to get a good vehicle description including a license plate number. Callers may always remain anonymous.
