(Mayfield, Ky.) -- During the week of June 1st through June 5th, a total of sixty-four (64) boys and girls from the Madisonville and Mayfield Post District spent a week at the Kentucky State Police Trooper Island Camp. Campers were picked up at their homes by Kentucky State Troopers and transported to their local Kentucky State Police Post where they departed for camp.

During the week on the island, campers participated in many activities such as swimming, canoeing, archery, fishing, and other outdoor activities. Campers also learned about good citizenship, hygiene, and leadership. Trooper Island is located on Dale Hollow Lake near the Cumberland and Clinton County line. Established in 1965, the free, summer camp is for underprivileged boys and girls ages 10 to 12 that may not have a chance to attend a summer camp. Each year approximately 700 campers attend the camp from across the state.

Trooper Island is a non-profit organization, which operates solely on private and business donations. If you would like to make a donation to Trooper Island, you may contact your local Kentucky State Police Post. Contributions are tax-deductible. Currently, the Kentucky State Police is raffling a 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T (license # ORG0000633) with proceeds going to Trooper Island. Tickets may be purchased from any Kentucky State Police Post.

The annual Post 1 Trooper Island Golf Tournament is scheduled for Thursday, September 10th at Lake Barkley State Resort Park. For more information, you may contact Trooper Dean Patterson at 270-856-3721 or email at dean.patterson@ky.gov.
