KSP Recognize National Public Safety Telecommunications Week

(Hickory, KY) -- April 12th - 18th marks National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. The United States Congress approved this special week in 1993 in an effort to recognize the men and women who serve as public safety telecommunicators. Kentucky State Police in Mayfield would like to take this time to recognize the tireless efforts that all 15 telecommunicators give on a daily basis. "This week honors the often unseen service of our 911 dispatchers.  Often, before a caller ever sees a uniformed Trooper, they have interacted with an agency Telecommunicator.  As such, we consider our 911 dispatchers as our first responders, for it is they that are charged with the awesome responsibility of regaining control of a destabilized situation, obtaining critical information from people under duress, and multi-tasking to dispatch the correct assistance needed", states Captain Nathan Kent, Post One Commander. "Moreover, the radio room must be staffed twenty-four hours a day, every day.  One can't put a price on that level of commitment and sense of duty."

State wide, Kentucky State Police approximately 180 telecommunicators. Although the telecommunicators are not as visible as the men and women who may arrive on the scene of emergencies, the telecommunicator's role has always been central to the operations of emergency personnel. Every day, State Police telecommunicators answer hundreds of emergency and non emergency calls. Often times, the effort of these men and women goes unnoticed. It is with pride that we honor each of the 15 Post 1 telecommunicators who serve our local communities as well as the other telecommunicators who serve other communities across the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
