Fatal Collision on Edward T. Breathitt Parkway in Henderson County

(Henderson, Ky.) -- Kentucky State Police Post 16 Henderson is investigating a fatality collision that occurred on the Edward T. Breathitt Parkway in Henderson County. Henderson City Police Department initiated a pursuit of a subject driving a Toyota pickup truck for felony charges. The Henderson County Sheriffs office took over the pursuit as the subject continued to flee southbound out of the city limits. KSP Post 16 assisted in the pursuit in a support capacity only. The Henderson County Sheriffs office deployed stop sticks that effectively struck the 2 front tires of the fleeing vehicle. The subject proceeded to flee southbound and cross into the northbound lanes of travel where he struck an oncoming northbound semi tractor trailer. The driver (Shawn M. Hanes, 44 years old) of the fleeing vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene by the Henderson County Coroners Office. An autopsy was performed this date (08/13/2009) by the State Medical Examiners in Madisonville. A report will be sent to Post at a later date. The investigation and reconstruction is on going. The driver (Dennis D. Allen, age 59) of the semi Tractor Trailer was taken to Henderson County Methodist Hospital where he was treated and released.
