Post 16 Troopers Honored at Awards Ceremony

Date of News Release: 05/21/2009

(Henderson, Ky.) -- On Wednesday, May 20, 2009, The Kentucky State Police held the annual awards ceremony in Frankfort. Three Henderson Troopers were honored.

Sgt. Lonnie Bell was awarded the KSP Citation for Bravery. This award is earned by troopers who perform acts of bravery, without regard for personal risk, of clear and obvious peril and clearly above and beyond the call of ordinary duty. On February 05, 2005 Sergeant Bell and Trooper Brett Comes were dispatched to a domestic complaint in which the home owner was armed. While officers were in the home the man fired several rounds. Sgt. Bell continued to attempt to negotiate a peaceful resolution. The man deliberately aimed his weapon at Sgt Bell and Trooper Coomes forcing them to take lethal action and fire their weapons. Trooper Coomes from Post 3, Bowling Green was also awarded the KSP Citation for Bravery.

Trooper Mitch Hampton was nominated as the Post 16 Trooper of the Year. Hampton sets an example for every unit at Post 16 with his hard work and enthusiastic approach on each and every shift. Trooper Hampton issued 1,094 citations with 115 DUI arrests and made 137 criminal arrests. He constantly maintains a positive attitude and leads the way for everyone to follow.

Trooper Matthew Wise was awarded the Guthrie Crowe Award. This award is named after the first commissioner of the Kentucky State Police and bestowed on officers who sustain a severe wound or injury in the performance of duty. Trooper Wise was severely injured on January 12, 2008 when a fleeing perpetrator drove into the median on the Natcher Parkway. The subject nearly hit Trooper Whittaker and struck Trooper Wise.
