Double Shooting in Letcher County

Date of News Release: 09/17/2009

(Neon, Ky) -- On September 16, 2009, at 2:30 PM, officers with Kentucky State Police, the Letcher County Sheriff's Department and Jenkins Police Department responded to the scene of a fatal shooting, which occurred on Apple Tree Branch in the Deane community of Letcher County. The suspect, Leslie Hughes and his brother Danny Hughes were allegedly involved in an argument when Leslie Hughes fired several shots from a handgun, one of which struck his brother, Danny in the leg. He then fled into a wooded area where, after an hour-long standoff with police, his body was located. The Letcher County Coroner pronounced him deceased at the scene of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Two Army National Guard helicopters assigned to the Cannabis Suppression Team assisted with surveillance of the area and helped to locate Hughes.

The shooting remains under investigation by Detective Charles Bledsoe and other detectives from KSP Post 13 Hazard. Danny Hughes was flown to Holston Valley Medical Center. He is listed in stable condition.
