News Release

Letcher County Traffic Fatality

Date of News Release: 05/03/2009

(Hazard, Ky.) -- The Kentucky State Police Post 13 in Hazard is investigating a fatal traffic collision that took place at approximately 3:30 P.M. on Sunday May 3rd, 2009. The accident happened just inside the city limits of Whitesburg on Kentucky Highway 15 near the intersection of Highway 931 South. A 1992 Chevrolet Lumina which was being operated by Jessica Pigg, age 27 of Viper, Ky crossed the center line colliding nearly head on with a 2008 Honda Accord which was driven by David Marcus Wittsack. age 19 of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. David Wittsack was transported by ambulance to the Whitesburg ARH Hospital. Jessica Pigg was pronounced deceased at the scene of the collision by Letcher County Deputy Coroner Robbie Campbell. Three passengers in her vehicle Samantha Brooke Hatton, age 15 of Whitesburg, Barbara Lee, age 59 of Thornton and Elizabeth Ross, age 14 of Whitesburg were all transported to the Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital. Elizabeth Ross was later transferred by ambulance to the Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN. Trooper Brandon Thomas, U/764 is in charge of the investigation. No criminal charges are expected to be filed at this time.

The Whitesburg City Police Department, Whitesburg Fire Department, Letcher & Neon Ambulance services also responded to this collision.
