Aircraft Makes Emergency Landing on KY 80 in Laurel County

(London, Ky.) -- On Wednesday, October 07, 2009, at approximately 3:05 PM (EDT), KSP Trooper Josh Wilson reported that an aircraft may have crashed on or near KY 80 West in Laurel County. Trooper Wilson, who was off-duty at the time, ran approximately 1/2 mile to the scene and located the aircraft in the median. The aircraft, a yellow 1941 Stinson 10A, had not crashed, but had made an emergency landing in the grassy median of KY 80, approximately four miles West of London.

(The pilot, and only occupant, Wayne Alsworth, 62 years of age, of Sterling, Alaska, was uninjured. Alsworth advised that he was piloting the aircraft from Mason City, Iowa, enroute to Boone, North Carolina. Alsworth advised that he had a fuel starvation (as a result of a gauge malfunction) resulting in the emergency landing. Fuel was brought to the scene, and at approximately 3:55 PM, the aircraft took off from the westbound lanes of KY 80.

Traffic was stopped on both east and westbound lanes for approximately 20 minutes. There was no property damage or injuries as a result of the incident.

Both the FAA and NTSB were contacted regarding the incident. Involved agencies included the Kentucky State Police, Laurel County Sheriff's Department, Laurel County Emergency Management, Swiss Colony Volunteer Fire Department and the Laurel County Rescue Squad.
