News Release

Burglary/Arson Arrest Harlan County

Date of News Release: 02/16/2009

(Cumberland, KY) - Kentucky State Police Post 10 Harlan responded to a house fire with someone possibly trapped in the residence on KY 160 near the community of Cumberland, KY. When KSP units and the Cumberland and Gordon Volunteer Fire Departments arrived at the scene, the residence was fully engulfed in flames. After the fire units extinguished the fire, Troopers and Detectives began searching for Dewey Cross, age 64 of Cumberland, KY. who was the owner of the residence and the possible subject that was trapped in the fire. After further investigation, Mr. Cross was located at Janice Shepherd's residence next door. Upon further investigation, it was found that Mr. Cross had allegedly set fire to his residence and then went next door to the Shepherd residence, forced entry and then set fire to that residence. Mr. Cross was charged with Burglary 2nd degree, Arson 2nd degree and Criminal Mischief 2nd degree and was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center. Assisting at the scene were Trooper Jared Boggs, Detective Tim Hensley, Sergeant Mark Gillingham, Johnsons LifeCare, Lynch P.D. and Benham P.D. This incident is still under investigation by Trooper Bryan Johnson of Kentucky State Police Post 10 Harlan.
