Fatal Collision on KY RT 80 in Langley, KY

(Pikeville, KY) - Mary Staley was attempting to cross KY RT 80 from KY RT 777 when she pulled into the path of Brenda Clements' vehicle striking Ms. Clements' vehicle which was eastbound on KY RT 80. Ms. Staley's vehicle then continued into the path of Gary K. Mullins who was driving a loaded coal truck, which was westbound on KY RT 80. Mr. Mullins attempted evasive maneuvers but struck Ms. Staley's vehicle causing the load to shift and the coal truck to overturn. Gary K. Mullins, was pronounced dead on scene by Floyd County Coroner Roger Nelson. Mary Staley, was flown to St Mary's Hospital in Huntington, West Virginia by air methods and listed in critical condition. Brenda Clements and a juvenile passenger of Ms. Clements' vehicle went by personal vehicle to St Joseph's Hospital in Martin, Kentucky where they were treated and released. The accident is being investigated by CVE Reconstructionist Tommy Gearheart U/4191. Officer Gearhart was assisted on scene by CVE LT. Kevin Henry U/4147, CVE Officers Keith Justice U/4180, Gary Mullins U/4201, Dennis Hutchinson U/4170, Mark Wallace U/4238, Mike Dudleson U/4231, Kentucky State Police Trooper Brad Austin U/461, Transtar Ambulance Service, Air Methods Air Ambulance, Garrett Fire Department, Maytown Fire Department, and Floyd County Coroner Roger Nelson. Death notification has been made.
