Assault 3rd on a Police Officer Arrest in Hickman, KY

(Hickman, KY) - A Hickman man was arrested overnight after an incident with a Kentucky State Trooper during a traffic stop in Hickman, KY. Lamont Smith, 25 of Hickman, was stopped by police at approximately 1:30 AM for failing to signal a turn while driving. Trooper Jason Clark spoke with Smith at his vehicle and asked Smith for proof of insurance which he was unable to provide. Smith exited his vehicle and was questioned further about having insurance on his vehicle. During the roadside interview, Smith began acting suspicious and attempted to reach back into his vehicle. Trooper Clark then patted down Smith to check for weapons when he felt a bulge in Smith's left pocket. At this time, Smith attempted to flee the scene and began emptying his pockets of suspected contraband. During this time, Smith swung his elbow striking Trooper Clark in the face. Trooper Clark quickly administered his O.C. spray to the face of Smith. A brief struggle ensued while Trooper Clark attempted to place Smith under arrest. A short time later, Trooper Clark was able to restrain Smith and place him under arrest. Lamont Smith was lodged in the Fulton County Jail where he was charged with the following:

• Failure to signal
• License to be in possession
• Open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle
• DUI 2^nd Offense
• Resisting arrest
• Tampering with physical evidence
• Assault 3^rd on a police officer
• Criminal mischief 3^rd degree
