Two Killed in a Head On Collision on I-24 in Livingston County

Date of News Release: 05/02/2008

(Hickory, KY) - The Kentucky State Police received multiple 911 calls of a vehicle driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of Interstate 24 in Livingston County. Troopers were responding, however, were unable to make contact before the vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with a semi tractor trailer. The semi came to final rest in the median and ignited. The passenger car came to final rest on the shoulder of the westbound lane. Both the driver (Wilma Joyce Schoonover, age 80) and passenger (Nadine Coleman, age 85) of the Chrysler were pronounced dead at the scene by the Livingston County Coroner. The Kentucky State Police, with assistance from Kentucky Department of Highways, Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement, Livingston County Sheriffs Department and Marshall County Sheriffs Department shut down the interstate and set up a detour from exit 31 to exit 27. The driver of the semi, Sherman Majors, was transported to Lourdes ER by Livingston County EMS. Majors was treated for minor injuries and released. The Evansville Police Department received a missing persons report at 2235 hrs and were in the process of entering the two elderly females as missing into NCIC . The investigation is continuing by Trooper Bob Winters.
