Traffic Concerns In Your Area?

(Mayfield, KY) - In addition to the other duties of the Kentucky State Police such as criminal investigations and arrests, the agency remains committed to keeping Kentucky's roads safer for every motorist.

In the Post 1 area of Ballard, Calloway, Carlisle, Fulton, Graves, Hickman, Livingston, Lyon, Marshall, McCracken, and Trigg Counties there were 64 traffic-related fatalities last year, the highest total recorded in 5 years. That is too many for Post 1 Commander, Nathan C. Kent. "64 deaths is very significant. If we had 64 murders in one year it would raise serious concerns about public safety, but 64 traffic deaths raises relatively little notice. It's time we change that attitude."

One of the ways to modify prevailing attitudes is by vigilant traffic enforcement in partnership with local residents. "Our Troopers can't be everywhere at all times," said Captain Kent. "We must depend on the residents of our area to be watchful for unsafe traffic behaviors such as speeding, reckless driving, and impaired driving. That is why we are enlisting the assistance of everyone."

If you see habitual traffic problems such as speeding, reckless driving, or other behaviors that make your roads unsafe, return the form below to the Kentucky State Police Post in Mayfield, and Captain Kent guarantees he will address it. "For every complaint we receive, I guarantee we will assign an officer to patrol and monitor traffic in the area within three days."

In addition, Post 1 participates in the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program or STEP. This is a statewide traffic initiative where each post assigns an officer strictly to traffic enforcement. "The STEP program allows us to be more flexible in responding to your traffic needs. With an officer dedicated to traffic enforcement, it is easier to detach him to respond to a particular area residents bring to our attention." Captain Kent is also embarking on bolstering the STEP program by employing "saturation patrols" along selected high accident risk roadways over the next year.

The ultimate goal is to systematically bring down the traffic fatality and injury rate in southwest Kentucky. "Over the past 5 years in our area we've averaged around 60 fatalities and hundreds of injuries annually in motor vehicle crashes," continued Captain Kent. "The risk is far greater than that of being murdered or assaulted, and it's a problem we're committed to addressing. In partnership with our citizens, I think we can make a significant difference."
