Graves Court Ruling for Amish Buggies

Date of News Release: 02/21/2008

(Mayfield, KY) - A judge's ruling involving members of the Amish community using slow-moving vehicle emblems on their horse drawn buggies has been handed down this morning in Graves District Court. Judge Deborah Hawkins Crooks found three members of the Graves County Amish community guilty today for failing to comply with KRS 189.820, requiring slow moving vehicles to affix an orange triangle on the rear of the vehicle. The guilty verdict stemmed from three separate citations issued by Kentucky State Police during the summer of 2007. In Judge Crooks' ruling, she writes "the Court's belief however, that these defendants are conflicted by their religious rules versus the state statute, the Court will impose on each of these defendants the minimum fine of $20.00 plus court costs of $128.00." The judge stated she will allow adequate time for the defendants to pay their respective fines.
