Fire at McLean County Animal Shelter

Date of News Release: 11/11/2008

(Henderson, KY) - At 5:37 am the McLean County Dispatch Office received a call of a fire at the Animal Shelter. McLean County Central District Fire Department and McLean County Ambulance Service responded and found the structure had been on fire for some time. The fire was extinguished soon after arrival. With the assistance of the Director of the facility, there were 16 dogs and two cats rescued. Due to the extreme heat and intense fire, all animals were not able to be rescued. Kentucky State Police and the Kentucky Fire Marshal's Office were brought in to assist in the cause and origin determination. The cause of the fire was determined to be from an electrical malfunction that ended up in energizing all electrical circuitry within the building resulting in the fire. The facility sustained damage to the extent that it is deemed to be a total loss. The Fiscal Court is working with their insurance carrier (KACO) to determine the next step of the process of rebuilding.

The rescued animals are being sheltered at a temporary shelter.

The McLean County Humane Society is working with the facility staff to assist with the care of the animals.

McLean County will be coordinating animal control operations with Daviess County Fiscal Court until further notice.

Anyone interested in adopting one of the pets or making donations may contact the McLean County Judge's office at 270-273-3123.
