Hands Across The Border

Date of News Release: 05/24/08

(Columbia, KY) - As part of Kentucky State Police's efforts to make Kentucky roadways safe a "Hands Across The Border" traffic safety checkpoint was held on US 127 in Clinton County and neighboring Pickett County in Tennessee on May 23rd, 2008. Kentucky State Police Troopers, Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement officers, Clinton County Sheriff's officers and Albany Police Department officers worked with Tennessee Highway Patrol Troopers and officers from several local Tennessee agencies during this detail.

Hands Across the Border was created in 1991 by safety advocates across the Southeast to bring about awareness of safety belt and aggressive driving concerns. The Governor's Highway Safety Program, works with participating state and local enforcement agencies to sponsor education and community outreach events, where motorists learn about the dangers of impaired driving and violating the speed limit, as well as the importance of obeying all occupant protection laws.

This year Kentucky authorities inspected approximately 430 vehicles at the checkpoint. There were 37 citations issued, 2 arrested for driving under the influence, 5 seat belt violations and 11 criminal arrest, which included drug charges. This safety checkpoint lasted three hours.
