Injury Collision on I-24 on the Marshall-Livingston County Line

Date of News Release: 10/23/2007

(Mayfield, KY.) On 10-23-07 at 1:37PM, Kentucky State Police received a report of a three vehicle collision in the Westbound Lane of I-24 on the Tennessee River Bridge. The investigation revealed all three vehicles involved were traveling West on I-24 near the Marshall-Livingston County Line on the Tennessee River bridge. A vehicle driven by Loren A. Sortman, 28 of Grand Rivers, KY struck the rear of a vehicle driven by Beverly Beckett, 56 of Eddyville, KY. A second impact occurred when a Tractor-Trailer combination driven by Verlin R. Tackett, 66 of Pittsburg, IL could not stop and struck the rear of the Sortman vehicle. Sortman and Beckett were transported to local hospitals and treated for injuries received in the collision. Loren Sortman was cited in to Marshall County District Court for Operating on a Suspended License and Possession of a Suspended License. The collision closed the westbound lanes of I-24 for approximately 2 hours while oil and other debris were cleared from the roadway. Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement, Kentucky Department of Transportation and the Gilbertsville Fire Department assisted state police at the scene. The investigation is continuing by Trooper Chris Smith.
