Hazardous Material Investigation in Murray, KY

Date of News Release: 10/16/2007

(MURRAY, KY) - On October 16, 2007 at 1:00PM, Kentucky State Police received a call from the owner of Papa Smurf's Mini Storage located on KY. 94 East that he had located possible explosive devices and components of a methamphetamine lab in a storage unit that had been abandoned. Trooper Trent Weaver responded and verified what appeared to be explosive material along with an anhydrous tank and other methamphetamine making material.

The Kentucky State Police and the Calloway County Sheriff's Department established a perimeter and evacuated businesses and houses surrounded the scene. Agents from the ATF and the Paducah Bomb Squad responded and secured the storage unit and all its content. Agents located blasting caps, detonation cord, explosive boosters and an abandoned methamphetamine lab. Some of the blasting caps found were identified as being very old, possible early nineteen hundreds. All the explosives were eventually detonated and methamphetamine components destroyed without incident. The area was declared safe at approximately 6:00PM allowing the roadway to re-open and everyone allowed back to their homes.

The Calloway County Sheriff's Department, ATF, Paducah Police Department Bomb Squad, Calloway County Emergency Management, and the Calloway County Fire and Rescue assisted state police at the scene. The investigation is continuing by Trooper Trent Weaver.
