Injury Collision on Highway 62 East in Lyon County

Date of News Release: 09/21/2007

(Mayfield, KY) - James R. Nanney was exiting Huck's Travel Center at Exit 40 on I-24 and was approaching the green traffic light on Highway 62 East. Jerry D. Phelps was approaching same intersection with emergency equipment activated and began to slow their speed, before approaching intersection, but realized that Mr. Nanney had already committed to going through the intersection. Mr. Phelps tried to avoid contact by swerving to miss Mr. Nanney's vehicle, but made contact striking the vehicle in the rear. Mr. Phelps then tried to regain control, but due to water shifting in the fire truck holding tank the vehicle left the roadway, struck a steel utility pole, and overturned coming to final rest in a ditch on the driver's side. US 62 eastbound was closed for an hour. Mr. Phelps was Air lifted to Deaconess Hospital and Mr. Littlepage was transported to Lourdes. Tpr Crawford was assisted on the scene by the Lyon Co EMS, Eddyville Fire, Kuttawa Fire, Lyon Co Rescue, Lyon Co So, Eddyville Police Department, Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement, Ky Utilities, and KY State Hwy Department. Investigation continues by Tpr Crawford.
