Injury Crash on I-24 in McCracken County
Date of News Release: 04/06/2007
(McCracken County) - McCracken County Deputy Sheriff Eric Augustus was traveling West on I-24 near the 3 mile marker responding to a wreck that occurred near the Kentucky/Illinois line. He was operating a 2007 Ford police cruiser with his lights and siren when he came up on a tractor trailer in the left lane. The truck did not yield right of way and Deputy Augustus changed lanes and passed on the right. As he attempted to change lanes again, he lost control of his vehicle and struck a bridge railing on the northbound side of the road. The vehicle then traveled back across the interstate and struck the rear trailer tires of a westbound 2007 Mack tractor driven by Melissa L. Fields, 29 of Arlington, TX. After the second impact, Deputy Augustus vehicle spun back across the passing lane, striking the bridge railing before coming to rest in the roadway. Deputy Augustus, who was wearing his seatbelt, received minor back injuries and was transported to Western Baptist Hospital for treatment. Melissa L. Fields, who was wearing her seatbelt, was not injured in the collision. The McCracken County Sheriff's Department assisted state police at the scene. The investigation is continuing by Trooper T.J. Williams.
