News Release

Fatal Air Plane Crash Near Worthington, KY

Date of News Release: 09/22/07

(Ashland, KY) - The Kentucky State Police in Ashland are conducting an investigation following the crash of an aircraft into the Ohio River near the banks of Worthington, KY. The incident occurred around 1500 hours on 9-22-07 when Kentucky State Police was notified of a possible downed aircraft. The investigation revealed the pilot had left Grayson, KY and was making an attempt to land at the Ashland Regional Airport in Worthington, KY. The aircraft landed into the Ohio River near the banks of the Kentucky side of the river.

Multiple agencies responded including the Worthington Police and Fire department, Wurtland Fire Department, Greenup County Sheriff, Greenup Emergency Management, Greenup EMS, and the Ashland Fire Department Dive Team who ultimately were responsible for the recovery of the pilot from the wreckage.

William G. Stevens, age 80, of Grayson, KY was pronounced dead at the scene by the Greenup County Coroner Neil Wright, after being removed from the Ohio River. The Greenup County Coroner has ordered an autopsy to be conducted in Frankfort, KY.

The aircraft was a fixed-wing single-engine plane believed to have been owned by Stevens.

The Kentucky State Police notified next of kin.

The Federal Aviation Administration has been notified of the incident and will be investigating.

** Detective Aaron Martin of the Kentucky State Police is continuing the investigation.
