Murder Investigation in Adair County, KY

Columbia, KY - The Kentucky State Police is investigating the murder of an Adair County man at the Beech Grove Baptist Church on Highway 900, west of Glensfork.

On Saturday night at approximately 10:00 p.m., forty-six year-old, Rex L. Coffey was sitting beneath the church's picnic shelter, with friends and family, when sixty-eight year-old, Willie Paul Grant drove up near the shelter and shot Mr. Coffey once with a rifle.

Adair County Deputy Sheriff Tommy Corbin was patrolling in the area and spotted Mr. Grant's vehicle shortly after the incident. Deputy Corbin attempted to stop the vehicle, and began a pursuit, which ended on Sand Lick Road, when Mr. Grant stopped his vehicle in a creek and fled on foot. Several Kentucky State Police Troopers arrived on the scene a short time later, and began an extensive search.

Rex L. Coffey was pronounced dead at 0950 hours, on Sunday morning, at the Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, TN.

Following a tip from a motorist, Mr. Grant was located on Sunday morning, at approximately 10:50 a.m., on Highway 900. Following a short standoff Mr. Grant was taken into custody by Kentucky State Police Officers.

Willie Paul Grant was charged with murder, and lodged in the Adair County Jail.

The investigation continues by Kentucky State Police Detective George Atwood and other officers at the Columbia State Police Post.
