December has been designated as 3-D (Drunk and Drugged Driving) Prevention Month

As more motorists take to Kentucky's highways during this Christmas holiday season, Kentucky State Police in Ashland are urging drivers to use common sense when traveling.

Drunk driving is one of America's deadliest crimes. In fact, during 2005 nearly 17,000 people were killed in highway collisions involving an impaired driver. In 2005, 220 persons were killed in fatal collisions on Kentucky's highways that involved a drunk driver. Sixty-two percent of these drivers involved in these fatal collisions had a BAC of 0.15 or above.

During this time of holiday parties and get-togethers, the KSP would like to remind motorists the importance of utilizing designated drivers. If you are planning to host a holiday party, the KSP would encourage you to serve non-alcoholic beverages; however, if you do attend a party where alcohol is served, be sure to designate a sober driver.

December has been designated as 3-D (Drunk and Drugged Driving) Prevention Month across the nation and the KSP in Ashland will be utilizing traffic check points, as well as moving patrol, to target intoxicated drivers, speed limit violators, and seat belt and child restraint violations.

Captain Lynn Cross, Commander of the Ashland KSP Post 14, states that troopers will have a no-tolerance policy for impaired drivers and drivers exceeding the speed limit. Captain Cross states that we are trying to heighten the public's awareness of the dangers of impaired driving-especially during this time of the year. He further states this month Post 14 troopers will be heavily patrolling the major roadways to include primary and secondary roadways focusing on high-crash areas. Captain Cross further offers the following tips to help avoid a tragic crash or an arrest for impaired driving:

• Plan ahead: Whenever you plan on consuming alcohol, designate your sober driver before going out and give that person your keys;
• If you're impaired, call a taxi, use mass transit or call a sober friend or family member to get you home safely;
• Use your community's Sober Rides program;
• Promptly report drunk drivers you see on the roadways to law enforcement;
• Wearing your seat belt or using protective gear on your motorcycle is your best defense against an impaired driver;
• And remember, Friends Don't Let Friends Drive Drunk. If you know someone who is about to drive or ride while impaired, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get to where they are going safely.
