Death Investigation in Russell County, KY

Date of News Release: 11/28/2005

(Columbia, KY) - On November 27, 2005, around 1550 hours, Trooper Jeremy Johnson and Deputies from the Russell County Sheriff's Department responded to a complaint 6 miles north of Russell Springs on the Lafavers Road in reference to an individual who was causing a disturbance and possibly under the influence of an unknown substance.

Upon Trooper Johnson's arrival, he discovered that Larry Copley had assaulted an elderly male and had fled into a wooded area. Trooper Johnson searched the woods and located Larry Copley, who was being restrained by 3 friends and family members. Larry Copley was placed under arrest and handcuffed. Larry Copley did not resist arrest and the officers did not use any force to subdue Larry Copley. While awaiting the arrival of EMS, Larry Copley became unresponsive.

Trooper Johnson immediately began CPR on Larry Copley and continued until EMS arrived on the scene. Larry Copley was then taken to the Russell County Hospital and later pronounced deceased by the Russell County Coroner. An autopsy will be performed at the State Medical Examiner's Office in Frankfort.

This investigation is continuing by Detective George Atwood.
