KSP Post 15 Investigates an Attempted Escape and Assault
Date of News Release: 07/24/2005
(Columbia, KY.) - The Kentucky State Police is investigating an Attempted Escape and Assault of a Deputy Jailer at the Russell County Jail.
Eighteen-year-old, Jacob Luttrell, a Russell County Kentucky resident, and nineteen-year-old, Patrick Callinan, of Lexington Kentucky, were being held in the Russell County Jail on numerous charges, including Auto Theft. At approximately 12:45 P.M., on July 23rd, both men assaulted and attempted to overpower Deputy Jailer, Randy Womack in an effort to escape from the facility. Womack defended himself and managed to thwart the escape as Deputy Jailer Jerrie Stephens called for Law Enforcement assistance and then blocked a doorway to contain the inmates. When the inmates learned that numerous Police Agencies were responding to the jail, they surrendered to the Deputy Jailers without further incident, and were returned to their cells.
Both Deputy Womack and Inmate Jacob Luttrell sustained minor injuries in the altercation, but neither required medical treatment.
Officers from The Russell County Sheriff's Department, Jamestown Police Department, Russell Springs Police Department, Kentucky State Police, and Members of the Russell County E.M.S. responded to the jail.
With the assistance of numerous officers, Trooper Kendra Wilson conducted the investigation and charged both Luttrell and Callinan with Attempted Escape 1st Degree and Assault 3rd Degree. Both were removed from the Russell County Jail and lodged in the Adair County Regional Jail.
