Arrest Made in the Death of Infant in Harlan, KY
Date of News Release: 06/16/2005
(Harlan, KY) - On 06/07/2005 at 11:40 hours, KSP Post 10 received a call from the Harlan Appalachian Hospital Emergency Room that a female subject had come into the ER hemmorhaging from what appeared to be a child birth.
They advised that the female subject did not have the child with her and wanted the Kentucky State Police to respond to her residence to locate the baby if possible.
When units arrived on scene at the residence they were unable to locate the child. Further investigation by Trooper Wright revealed the location of the child. Units responded to this location and found the infant child on the back porch in a plastic container underneath a pile of debris. The infant was checked for vital signs and none were present. Harlan County Deputy Coroner Gerald Scott was dispatched to the scene where he pronounced the infant dead.
The infant was sent for an autopsy at the State Medical Examiners Office in Frankfort where the findings are still pending at this time.
On June 15, 2005 at 21:00 hours, Sgt. Damon Gayheart, Trooper Jason B. Adams, and Wallins Police Chief David Williams responded to a residence in Wallins and arrested the mother on warrants obtained by Det. Cornett. Ms. Bailey was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center.
The incident is still under investigation by Det. Cornett.
