Bank Robbery and Death Investigation in Lake City, KY

Date of News Release 12/15/04

(LAKE CITY, KY.) On December 14, 2004 at 3:53 PM, Kentucky State Police received a 911 call from BB&T Bank in Lake City advising a white male had robbed the bank at gunpoint.

A description of the suspect vehicle, a black Trans-Am with a blonde female driver, was given to troopers on I-24. Trooper Jerry Knight located the vehicle traveling Westbound at the 30-mile marker. Once back up arrived, Troopers Todd Combs, Jerry Knight and Lewie Dodd initiated a traffic stop at the 17 mile-marker. The vehicle pulled to the shoulder of I-24, but neither the driver nor passenger exited the vehicle as directed.

Troopers fired on the vehicle after the passenger was observed discharging a weapon from inside the vehicle and they feared for the safety of both themselves and the driver.

The passenger sustained what appeared to be a single gunshot to the head that is believed to have been self inflicted. He was transported to Lourdes Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:30 PM by McCracken County Coroner Dan Sims. An autopsy is scheduled for December 16 2004 in Louisville to determine the manner of death. The deceased, whose name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was also a suspect in the robbery of the Farmers Bank in Salem and the Union Planters Bank in Paducah.

The driver of the vehicle, Bobbie J. Vaughn, 30 of Paducah, KY is being charged with Complicity to Robbery 1st Degree and was lodged in the McCracken County Jail.

The bank robbery investigation is continuing by Kentucky State Police Detectives Janet Gabbard and Steve Bryan. Post One LT. Nathan Kent, Post Three LT. David Crafton and Post Sixteen LT. Kerry Sims are conducting the administrative investigation. The involved officers are currently on administrative leave pending the conclusion of the investigation.
