**Update 11/08/04** Shooting Incident Involving KSP Troopers

Date of News Release: 11/08/2004

(Ashland, KY) -Kentucky State Police in Ashland are continuing to investigate a shooting incident near the Boyd-Carter County line involving an armed suspect who was fatally wounded by troopers.

The Carter County Sheriff's Department requested assistance at a residence on Hollow Road in Rush, Ky. regarding a suspect who was alleged to have a firearm and threatening to kill a relative who lived nearby.

As KSP troopers arrived, they encountered the above listed suspect walking from a wooded area armed with a shotgun. The suspect continued toward the troopers and refused to comply with numerous verbal commands to drop his firearm. The suspect raised the shotgun, pointing it at the officers, at which time the officers fired at the suspect. The suspect was struck by the officers' fire and pronounced dead by the Boyd County Coroner.

An autopsy is scheduled at the state medical examiners office in Frankfort, Ky. Trooper James Ryland and Trooper Jim Goble were the officers involved in the shooting. Neither were injured in the incident. Both officers were placed on administrative leave pending the investigation which is standard procedure in officer involved shootings.
