Death Investigation in Laurel County

Date of News Release: 7/3/2004

(London, KY) - On Saturday, July 3, 2004 at approximately 10:00 am the Kentucky State Police in London received the report of a possible drowning at Woods Creek Lake off Laurel Cove Road in Laurel County. After emergency personnel arrived they discovered that James Leonard Duffiny age 48 of Presque Isle, Michigan was swimming approximately 40 yards off shore when he went under water and did not resurface. Witnesses who saw Mr. Duffiny go under water attempted to rescue him but was unable to and contacted the Kentucky State Police.

At approximately 3:19 members of the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife and Laurel County Rescue Squad discovered the body of James Leonard Duffiny. Laurel County Deputy Coroner Britt Brown pronounced him dead at the scene. Mr. Duffiny was not wearing a life jacket.

Kentucky State Police Detective Gary lane is conducting the investigation and was assisted at the scene by Trooper Mark Allen, Laurel County Rescue Squad, and Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Officers.

The investigation is continuing.
