Update Death Investigation on Missing Child in Wayne County
Date of News Release: 6/28/2004
(LONDON, KY) - On Monday, June 28, 2004 at approximately 6:30 p.m. the body of Jonathan Darrell Ranken Hicks age 5 of Monticello was located. The body was discovered over a 200-foot embankment lying in the water of Lake Cumberland approximately 500 yards from where he was last seen on Sunday. The Pulaski County Coroners Office pronounced Jonathan Darrell Ranken Hicks dead at the scene. The body will be taken to the Kentucky State Medical Examiners Office in Frankfort for an autopsy to determine the exact cause and time of death.
The investigation began on Sunday, June 27, 2004 at approximately 9:00 p.m. when Kentucky State Police officers responded to a residence of Bobby and Jewell Hicks who wanted to report their son, Jonathan, age 5, missing. Search efforts began at approximately 10:00 p.m. by authorities from several agencies searched the area by ground and air and were unable to locate the child.
On Monday, June 28, 2004 throughout the day aircraft searched the area, along with ground search teams on all-terrain vehicles, K-9 search teams, and divers who searched an area pond, but were unsuccessful. The search continued until approximately 6:30 p.m. when the body of the missing child was located.
Kentucky State Police Detective Todd Dalton is conducting the investigation. Assisting at the scene were Troopers from the Kentucky State Police, Wayne County Sheriff Department, Wayne County Rescue, Wayne County EMS, Pulaski County Sheriff Department, Pulaski County Rescue, Bronston Fire Department and Kentucky Emergency Management.
