Arrest made in Murder Investigation in Wayne County
(MONTICELLO, KY) - On Sunday, May 16, 2004 at approximately 11: 30 a.m. the Wayne County Sheriff Department responded to the report of a possible murder on Cooper Drive off KY 167 approximately 4 miles south of Monticello in Wayne County. Upon arrival Deputies discovered a male subject deceased with multiple injuries and a second male severely injured at the residence.
Kentucky State Police Detectives Todd Dalton and Billy Correll responded to the scene to assist in the investigation. The Wayne County Coroners Office pronounced William E. Wells Sr. age 92 dead at the scene. An autopsy will be preformed to determine the exact cause and time of death. His son William E. Wells Jr. age 64 was transported to the Wayne County Hospital in Monticello. He was later transported to the UK Medical Center in Lexington where he remains in serious condition.
On Monday, May 17, 2004 at approximately 3:30 a.m. two subjects were arrested in connection with the murder and assault. George M. Maupin age 22 of Monticello was charged with Murder, Robbery 1st and Assault 1st, Richard Taylor Jr. age 24 of Monticello was charged with Murder, Robbery 1st, Assault 1st and Forgery 2nd Degree. Both are currently lodged in the Wayne County Detention Center in Monticello.
The investigation is continuing with an additional arrest pending investigation. Kentucky State Police Detective Todd Dalton is conducting the investigation. Assisting at the scene and in the investigation are Detective Billy Correll, Sheriff James Hill and the Wayne County Sheriff Department.
