Twelve Die on Kentucky Roadways (August 27 through Sept. 3)

(Frankfort, Ky.) -- Preliminary statistics* indicate that 12 people died in 12 separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, Aug. 27 through Monday, Sept. 3, 2012.
Seven of the victims were traveling in motor vehicles and five were not wearing seat belts. One single fatality crash occurred in each of the following counties: Fayette, Floyd, Hardin, Jefferson, Laurel, Madison and Metcalfe. The crash in Laurel County involved the use of alcohol.
Two fatalities were the result of motorcycle crashes: one in Jefferson County and one in Rowan County. The victim in Rowan County was not wearing a helmet.
Two fatalities were the result of ATV crashes: one in Knott County and one in Pike County. Both victims were not wearing helmets. The crash in Knott County involved the use of alcohol.
One bicycle rider was killed in Fayette County.
Through Sept. 3, preliminary statistics* indicate that 481 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2012. This is two less than reported for this time period in 2011. Of the 377 motor vehicle fatalities, 215 victims were not wearing seat belts. Of the 57 motorcycle fatalities, 29 were not wearing a helmet. Five of the six ATV fatalities were not wearing a helmet. Thirty-seven pedestrians, one scooter/moped rider and three bicycle riders have been killed. A total of 82 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas. Crash data for this report is generated from the Kentucky Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
