Twelve Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week (March 26 through April 1)

(Frankfort, Ky.) -- Preliminary statistics* indicate that twelve people died in twelve separate crashes on Kentucky roadways from Monday, Mar. 26, through Sunday, Apr. 1, 2012.
Seven of the fatalities involved motor vehicles and one victim was not wearing a seat belt. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Christian, Grayson, Lewis, Oldham, Pendleton, and Rockcastle (2) counties. The crash in Pendleton County involved the suspected use of alcohol.
Five fatalities involved a motorcycle and occurred in Boone, Hart, Logan, Madison, and McCracken counties. Four of the victims were not wearing helmets. The crash in Logan County involved the suspected use of alcohol.
Through Apr. 1, 2012, preliminary statistics* indicate that 151 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2012. This is 1 less fatality than reported for the same time period in 2011. There have been 129 motor vehicle fatalities and 73 of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Eighteen of those crashes involved a commercial motor vehicle. Nine crashes involved a motorcycle and six victims were not wearing helmets. Two crashes involved an ATV and one victim was not wearing a helmet. Eleven crashes involved a pedestrian. Twenty-five deaths have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas. Crash data for this report is generated from the Kentucky Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
