Eleven Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week (March 12 through March 18)

(Frankfort, Ky.) -- Preliminary statistics* indicate that eleven people died in five separate crashes on Kentucky roadways from Monday, March 12, through Sunday, March 18, 2012.

Eight of the fatalities involved motor vehicles and six victims were not wearing seat belts. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Breathitt, Daviess, Hopkins, Jefferson, Knox, Monroe, Pike and Warren counties. The crashes in Daviess and Monroe counties involved the suspected use of alcohol.

One motorcycle involved fatality occurred in Boone County and involved the suspected use of alcohol. The victim was not wearing a helmet.

Two pedestrian involved fatalities occurred in Jefferson and Taylor counties.

Through March 18, 2012, preliminary statistics* indicate that 130 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2012. This is 4 less fatalities than reported for the same time period in 2011. There have been 114 motor vehicle fatalities and 67 of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Fifteen of those crashes involved a commercial motor vehicle. Four crashes involved a motorcycle and two victims were not wearing a helmet. Two crashes involved an ATV and one victim was not wearing a helmet. Ten crashes involved a pedestrian. Twenty-one deaths have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas. Crash data for this report is generated from the Kentucky Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
