Date of News Release: 02/20/12
(Frankfort, Ky.) -- Preliminary statistics* indicate that five people died in five separate crashes on Kentucky roadways from Monday, Feb. 13, through Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012.
All of the fatalities involved motor vehicles and three victims were not wearing seat belts. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Breckinridge, Floyd, Henderson, Madison and Washington counties. The crash in Henderson County involved the suspected use of alcohol.
Through Feb. 19, 2012, preliminary statistics* indicate that 77 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2012. This is 5 less fatalities than reported for the same time period in 2011. There have been 69 motor vehicle fatalities and 38 of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Seven of those crashes involved a commercial motor vehicle. Two crashes involved a motorcycle and one victim was not wearing a helmet. Two crashes involved an ATV and one victim was not wearing a helmet. Four crashes involved a pedestrian. Thirteen deaths have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas. Crash data for this report is generated from the Kentucky Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
