KSP Highway Safety Branch News Release

Two Die on Kentucky Highways during Thanksgiving Holiday

Date of News Release: 11/28/11

(Frankfort, Ky.) -- Preliminary statistics* indicate that two people died in two separate crashes on Kentucky roadways during the Thanksgiving holiday enforcement period (Wednesday, November 23 at 6:00 p.m. through Sunday, November 27, 2011 at 11:59 p.m.) Last year there were nine highway fatalities during the same time period.

Both fatalities involved motor vehicles and neither victim was wearing a seat belt. The crashes occurred in Fayette and Mercer County.

Through Nov. 27, 2011, preliminary statistics* indicate that 654 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2011. This is fifty-two less fatalities than reported for the same time period in 2010. There have been 514 motor vehicle fatalities and 266 of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Fifty-eight of those crashes involved a commercial motor vehicle. Sixty-one crashes involved a motorcycle and thirty-four victims were not wearing helmets. Twenty-five crashes involved an ATV and twenty-one victims were not wearing helmets. Forty-eight crashes involved pedestrians and two involved a bicycle. Two crashes involved a scooter and two involved a horse-drawn vehicle. A total of one hundred six fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas. Crash data for this report is generated from the Kentucky Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
