KSP Highway Safety Branch News Release

Twelve Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week (Sept. 26 through Oct 2)

Date of News Release: 10/03/11

(Frankfort, Ky.) -- Preliminary statistics* indicate that twelve people died in ten separate crashes on Kentucky roadways from Monday, Sept. 26, through Sunday, Oct. 2, 2011.

Nine of the fatalities involved motor vehicles and four of the victims were not wearing seat belts. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Breckinridge, Hart, Jackson, Jefferson, and Warren counties.

Two double-fatality motor vehicle crashes occurred in Christian and Pike counties and the suspected use of alcohol is a factor in the Pike County collision.

One motorcycle-involved fatal crash occurred in Hardin County and the victim was wearing a helmet. An ATV-involved fatal crash occurred in Hopkins County and the victim was not wearing a helmet.

One pedestrian-involved fatal crash occurred in Jefferson County.

Through Oct. 2, 2011, preliminary statistics* indicate that 527 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2011. This is fifty-five less fatalities than reported for the same time period in 2010. There have been 416 motor vehicle fatalities and 218 of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Forty-one of those crashes involved a commercial motor vehicle. Fifty crashes involved a motorcycle and twenty-seven victims were not wearing helmets. Twenty crashes involved an ATV and seventeen of the victims were not wearing a helmet. Thirty-seven crashes involved pedestrians and two involved a bicycle. One crash involved a scooter and one involved a horse-drawn vehicle. A total of eighty-four fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas. Crash data for this report is generated from the Kentucky Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
