Thirteen Die Over Labor Day Holiday on Kentucky Highways

(Frankfort, Ky.) -- Preliminary statistics* indicate that thirteen people died in eleven separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways during the official Labor Day holiday period, which began at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 2 and ended at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 5, 2011.

Eight of the fatalities involved motor vehicles and five of those were not wearing seat belts. The motor vehicle crashes occurred in Anderson, Butler, Franklin, Leslie and Pulaski counties. There was a triple-fatality motor vehicle crash in Edmondson County.

One crash involved a motorcycle in Marshall County and the victim was not wearing a helmet. The suspected use of alcohol was a factor in this crash.

Two ATV involved fatal crashed occurred in Harlan County and both victims were not wearing helmets.

Two pedestrian involved fatal crashes occurred in Hancock and Jefferson counties and both crashes involved the suspected use of alcohol.

Through Sept. 5, 2011, preliminary statistics* indicate that 473 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2011. This is 41 less than reported for the same time period in 2010. Thirty-two of those crashes involved a commercial motor vehicle. There were 375 motor vehicle fatalities and 201 of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Thirty-one pedestrians have been killed. Forty-four fatalities involved a motorcycle, one involved a scooter, two involved a bicycle, and nineteen involved an ATV. One crash involved a horse drawn vehicle. A total of seventy five fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas. Crash data for this report is generated from the Kentucky Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
