KSP Highway Safety Branch News Release

Two Die During Memorial Day Holiday Period

Date of News Release: 05/31/11

(Frankfort, Ky.) -- Preliminary statistics* indicate that two people died in two separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways during the official Memorial Day holiday period, which began at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 27 and ended at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, May 30.

Both of the fatalities involved motor vehicles and one of the victims was not wearing a seat belt. The motor vehicle crashes occurred in Pike and Jefferson counties.

Through May 30, preliminary statistics* indicate that 237 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2010. This is 26 less than reported for the same time period in 2010. There were 195 motor vehicle fatalities and 117 of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Twenty-four pedestrians have been killed. Eleven fatalities involved a motorcycle, 1 involved a scooter and four involved an ATV. Two fatalities involved a bicycle. Eighteen crashes involved a commercial motor vehicle. A total of thirty-five fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas. Crash data for this report is generated from the Kentucky Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
