KSP Reports First Motorcycle Fatality of 2011 (Feb. 21 through Feb. 27)

(Frankfort, Ky.) -- Preliminary statistics* indicate that seven people died in five separate crashes on Kentucky roadways from Monday, Feb. 21, through Sunday, Feb. 27, 2011.
Five of the fatalities involved motor vehicles and three of the victims were not wearing seat belts. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Johnson and Pike counties. A triple fatality crash occurred in Hardin County.
One motorcycle involved crash occurred in Knott County and the victim was not wearing a helmet. The two vehicle collision occurred on Montgomery Road in Emmalena. A vehicle that was driven by Twyla Moberly crossed into the opposing lane and struck a motorcycle being operated by Ricky Allen Shepherd. Mr. Shepherd was pronounced deceased on the scene by the Knott County Coroner. The crash is under investigation by KSP Post 13 in Hazard.
One ATV involved crash occurred in Lewis County and the victim was not wearing a helmet.
Through Feb. 27, preliminary statistics* indicate that eighty-six people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2011. This is nine less fatalities than reported for the same time period in 2010. There were seventy-two motor vehicle fatalities and forty-six of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Thirteen of those crashes involved a commercial motor vehicle. One crash involved and motorcycle and the victim was not wearing a helmet. One crash involved an ATV and the victim was not wearing a helmet. Twelve crashes involved pedestrians. A total of thirteen fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas. Crash data for this report is generated from the Kentucky Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
